State Senator Neil Anderson and State Representative Norine Hammond are inviting area families to grab their fishing poles and join them for a free Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Goose Ranch in Canton.
“This is one of my favorite events because it brings families together and gives kids a chance to enjoy the outdoors,” said Senator Anderson. “Whether they’re experienced fishermen or casting a line for the first time, we want every child to have a great morning and leave with a smile.”
The derby will run from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Goose Ranch, 25369 Goose Ranch Road, and is open to children ages 12 and under.
“Fishing teaches patience, responsibility, and an appreciation for nature,” said Representative Hammond. “We’re excited to host another event where kids can enjoy the outdoors and maybe even catch the biggest fish of the day.”
Prizes will be awarded for:
- Longest Fish
- Most Fish Caught
- Sportsman Award
The first 35 children to arrive will receive a free rod-and-reel combo, and free snacks will be available for all participants courtesy of Hy-Vee.
Representatives from the Illinois Conservation Police and the Illinois River Biological Station will also be on hand to talk with families and answer questions about Illinois wildlife and conservation.
When entering Goose Ranch, attendees should let staff know they are there for the Fishing Derby.
